How Trucks, Rail, and Ports can Collaborate
Moving a high volume of shipping containers from ports to scattered distribution points traditionally requires thousands of daily truck trips. A highly efficient alternative is using electric cargo trains to move these containers inland to centralized distribution hubs, reserving trucks for shorter, localized deliveries. This intermodal approach significantly enhances supply chain efficiency, lowers operational costs, and delivers far greater carbon emission reductions than relying solely on electric trucks. Over the long term, moving goods inland via rail offers a vastly more sustainable environmental footprint compared to pure road transport.
This configuration is not designed to replace trucks entirely, but rather to support the trucking industry by providing a high-capacity, sustainable backbone connecting ports to the rest of the nation. In this hybrid model, rail handles the high-volume long-haul transit, while trucks manage the flexible “last-mile” delivery from inland railheads to final destinations. This collaboration optimizes the strengths of both transport modes, reducing highway congestion, minimizing wear and tear on public roads, and streamlining urban freight distribution.
Such an innovative infrastructure configuration would be uniquely beneficial for Singapore, particularly given the location of the new Tuas Port. By constructing an underground freight rail network running directly beneath the cross-island highways, Singapore could seamlessly link its mega port to key industrial zones without sacrificing scarce surface land. This subterranean rail link would ensure rapid, weather-resilient container movement while preserving urban liveability and advancing the nation’s green logistics goals.
