PRIME MINISTER CONFIDENT PTP WILL DRIVE DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYSIA’S LOGISTICS AND PORTS SECTOR
GELANG PATAH, 11 January 2024 – Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a member of MMC Group is expected to continue driving the development of the logistics and port sector in Malaysia. This is in line with the Group’s commitment to invest nearly RM26 billion over the next five (5) years to build various developments in the Sungai Pulai area. This investment and development is expected to generate more than 23,000 job opportunities in the area.
MMC Group will also develop a Green Fuel Terminal for the supply of methanol for the shipping industry. This is a game-changer initiative in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Malaysia’s aspirations towards Net Zero, green energy development, and ensuring environmental sustainability.
The investment by MMC Group will also include RM10 billion over the next five (5) years for the development of PTP’s Phase 3A terminal, and upgrading of the existing PTP terminal, covering automation, digitisation, and human resource empowerment at the port.
YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is optimistic MMC Group and PTP are able to remain competitive and continue to contribute positively to the Malaysian economy, especially for the state of Johor.
The investment is in line with the Government’s aspirations through the Ekonomi Madani philosophy to elevate Malaysia’s economy to be among the world’s top 30, thus creating a thriving economic chain such as job opportunities with high incomes that can benefit not only the people of Johor, but also Malaysians as a whole.
“Despite facing tough challenges due to the current uncertain global economic and political situation, the development of PTP continues to focus on efforts to expand capacity, upgrade and add equipment and facilities, as well as improve terminal efficiency and port-related activities to make it a trade and shipping hub in the region.”
“Apart from its strategic location at the Straits of Malacca shipping route, PTP’s strength is bolstered by its excellent track record in managing port operations.”
“This is proven by PTP’s success in being ranked as the 15th busiest port in the world. PTP is also in the 6th place as the most efficient port in the world according to the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) report, released by the World Bank last year,” added YAB Prime Minister.
YBhg Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said, PTP not only has world-class port facilities but is also a point of reference for the regional maritime industry. PTP also leads in various other fields such as sustainability, digitisation through the Internet of Things (IoT), women’s workforce empowerment initiatives as well as the provision of industrial vocational and technical training.
“PTP is the busiest transshipment hub in Malaysia, covering 1,900 acres of terminal and 1,600 acres of free zone area that provides services to major shipping companies and container operators, providing shippers in Malaysia and abroad with extensive connectivity to the global market,” he said.
Today, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim attended Majlis Beramah Mesra with the employees of Port of Tanjung Pelepas and MMC Group in Gelang Patah.
