KUALA LUMPUR, 3 March 2025 – Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (“Northport”), a member of MMC Group, was recognised as one of the recipients in the ‘Low Carbon Zone’ category at the 2024 Low Carbon Cities Award. The award presentation ceremony was held at Sofitel Hotel Kuala Lumpur Damansara on 26 February 2025. Northport’s Chief Executive Officer, Fakhrul Azhar Tajudin, received the award on behalf of the company from the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Northport is the first port in Malaysia to achieve the prestigious ‘4 Diamond’ recognition in this award. Since 2021, the port has successfully reduced its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 33.94%, equivalent to 30,574.29 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e). Additionally, Northport has increased its carbon sequestration potential by 69.26%, reaching 229.32 tCO₂ per year.

“The 2024 Low Carbon Cities Award is a testament to Northport’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability in our port operations. Northport is grateful for the support from the local council, Klang Royal City Council, for their relentless efforts in implementing greenhouse gas emission reduction initiatives through the Low Carbon Cities 2030 Challenge programme,” said Fakhrul.

Low Carbon Cities is an initiative by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (“MGTC”) under the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environmental Sustainability to help shift Malaysian cities towards a low carbon future. In achieving this, the Low Carbon Cities Framework was established in 2011, aimed to guide local authorities, universities and all states nationwide in transforming their cities into low carbon cities. The framework addresses carbon emissions in four main areas: Urban Environment, Urban Infrastructure, Urban Transportation and Buildings.

Northport presented its baseline carbon data from 2021 and conducted an assessment for the year 2023, focusing on key areas such as energy consumption, water usage, waste management and carbon sequestration initiatives. In October 2024, this data was presented during an audit session, which included a site visit and data verification process conducted by MGTC. The process involved data analysis, implementation of new sustainability practices and a commitment to continuous improvement.

“To embrace a sustainable future, Northport remains committed to empowering our employees and stakeholders by playing our role in building a better world for future generations. Our ultimate goal is to deliver the best service to our clients while driving meaningful change towards a greener and more sustainable future,” said Fakhrul.
